In Queensland, owners/operators of large water usage systems (retirement villages, factories, sporting complexes, units, holiday parks etc) are required by legislation to audit water usage regularly to minimise waste and leakage.

Leaktech carried out this work and provides extensive reports on findings. Often the work takes as little as a day and identifies both leakage and wastage, allowing plumbers to rectify problems.

We are able to provide details upon request of satisfied users who will vouch for the savings identified. It is a financially sound decision to have this work carried out regularly despite legal obligations as the savings identified and the peace of mind outweigh the investment (which gets cheaper after the initial investigation).

One complex saved over $30,000 a year when we located a leaking obsolete pipe installed during construction and buried with just a poly pipe folded on itself as a “cap” for over 16 years. It is not known how long the pipe had been leaking but there was no sign of water above ground as the water lost was entering a damaged storm water pipe and running away unseen.

Recent record flood rains in South East Qld have caused major damage to water infrastructure. As usual, Leaktech Australia is called to locate breakages and leaks caused by pipe movement.

For over 18 years, we have been carrying out this emergency work on a contract basis for Government and semi-government authorities. As the owners of one of the first pipe correlators in Australia many years ago, Leaktech has now developed many exclusive practices and specially built equipment for such work. We constant upgrade our electronic equipment with new items arriving all the time to assist with specialised work.

Clearing blocked drains is something everybody hopes to avoid mainly because it is such a dirty task. However a lot of residential bathrooms and kitchens suffer from a blocked drain at one point or another.

Blocked drains cause a back-up of water or sewage which may cause trouble for our property owners and disrupt our every day lives. Every home owner must understand what causes a blocked drain and also the things they could do to avoid the problem from happening.

photo credit: Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection

Drains may block because they are in bad physical condition or are not being cleaned. They might be in satisfactory condition but are abused by flushing away disposable nappies or additional things such as plastic bags that should in no way be sent down the sewerage system. Disposal of cooking fats and oils, and other domestic products such as DIY supplies such as plaster, can cause blockage of the pipework. Amongst the worst types of household emergencies are those linked to clogged drains. Similar to other household emergencies, they simply occur unexpectedly.

Tree roots are the most typical cause of blocked drains in Australia. Especially in the hottest months of summer, trees are thirsty for water and are attracted to the moisture build-up or condensation which forms on the outside of pipes.

Blocked drains can also impact your business, effecting sales and productivity.

Using hydrojet, electric eel and CCTV cameras to effectively assist you with clogged drains and other plumbing services. LeakTech Australia’s services stretches to Leak Detection for bathrooms, kitchens and laundries. Blocked drains do not happen overnight, they get steadily worse before becoming completely blocked and the situation is urgent. Should you suspect you have a drain which is partly blocked, call us as soon as possible.

It may surprise you to learn that only about 1% of domestic water is used for cooking and drinking. The rest of our beautifully treated water is used for bathing, flushing toilets, washing clothes, watering lawns and gardens and many other uses. Please take a look at these Water Facts.

The average SCRD water customer uses approximately 620 litres of water every day, considerably higher than many other west coast communities. The graph shown here provides a comparison between average daily water use per person in the SCRD and in other communities based on 2001 consumption data. The figures include both residential and non-residential water use (i.e. all sectors).

While the Sunshine Coast has plenty of rain in the winter, summers are typically dry. As illustrated in the second graph, SCRD water use is highest in the summer months (when creek flows are lowest). This puts considerable stress on our surface and groundwater supplies and on our water distribution system.

The goal of the SCRD’s Water Conservation Program is to reduce the rate of drinking water consupmption by promoting water efficient practices and technology. By doing this we can reduce the impacts on local streams and groundwater aquifers, and defer the need for expensive new water supply, storage and treatment infrastructure.

It started as a leak.

Just a small one. There was not a huge stream of water gushing out all at once, but it was constant and it worried Diddillibah resident Michael Sekulich when he spotted it on Friday morning.

He rang the council about 9.30am that same day to report the leak, which was coming up from under the ground on the driveway used by Mr Sekulich to access his horses.

Yesterday that driveway resembled a small dam or a very large puddle, depending on how you looked at it.

The water had continued to leak out of the underground pipes in a constant stream during the weekend, and yesterday morning Mr Sekulich said he could not believe his eyes.

“The lady on the phone (when he rang the council) said she would get in touch with the water board, and no one has come down yet and it has been running ever since,” he said.

“It is running like an open tap. It has come up from the ground and is filling the driveway of the farm.

“It is like a dam now. Must be running at a litre a minute, easy.”

Mr Sekulich said he worried about the water loss, given the added pressure placed on Queensland residents to respect the natural resource.

A council spokeswoman said Mr Sekulich’s call had been logged but from the information he had provided the call centre, the job was assessed at a lower priority, which did not necessitate a response for up to three working days.

The spokeswoman said based on the new information, the council would contact Mr Sekulich again for a better idea of the situation.

Council staff members are believed to have subsequently addressed the problem.

Leaktech has added a premium quality Thermal Imaging Camera to its list of technologies. We will now find many leaks faster. As usual, we are the first to use this equipment locally (although others claim to have them).

The human eye cannot perceive infrared radiation but now Leaktech can.

Moist areas have minor temperature differences to surrounding areas. Our new equipment can take a thermal image of an area and overlay that image on a digital photograph taken by the same unit. The source area of moisture in slabs can also be located quickly using this method.

Leaktech technicians have been trained to accurately interpret these images to narrow the area of the leak investigation quickly.

Blockages in exposed pipes are often visible with this method. In fact there is a wide range of building diagnostics where this will assist. The investigation is totally non-invasive.

There are many uses when seeking breakdowns in insulation, mould problems, and burst pipes underground.

We see this technology making our jobs faster and more accurate, which benefits you and your clients.
